The Thru the Bible Radio Archive: Complete Guide
Thru the Bible is the strangest and most instructive sermon archive in Christian broadcasting, because it was finished on purpose. J. Vernon McGee taught his way through the whole Bible verse by verse on a fixed five-year cycle, recorded the entire journey, and it has kept looping on radio since he died in 1988. This guide covers what the archive contains, how the five-year cycle works, and why a completed archive is a category of asset most ministries never build.

What Is the Thru the Bible Radio Archive?
J. Vernon McGee (1904–1988) was a Presbyterian-trained pastor best known for his years at the Church of the Open Door in Los Angeles. His radio teaching was folksy, Texan and completely unhurried, and its organising idea was simple: take listeners through every book of the Bible, in order, in thirty-minute daily instalments, over five years, then start again.
The decision that made the archive remarkable was recording the whole cycle so that it could continue without him. It has. Thru the Bible has aired continuously since McGee's death, and the ministry has invested heavily in translation, producing the programme in a very large number of languages for broadcast around the world. The English archive is free to stream and download, and the ministry publishes accompanying notes and outlines. It sits alongside the Lutheran Hour archive as a study in how radio, not the pulpit, preserved twentieth-century preaching.
What's Inside the Archive
The structure is the archive. Because the programme runs sequentially through scripture, the collection functions as an audio commentary you can enter at any verse rather than a set of standalone talks.
- A complete verse-by-verse journey through all sixty-six books of the Bible, in thirty-minute daily episodes
- The full five-year cycle recorded during McGee's lifetime and rebroadcast continuously since 1988
- Printed notes, outlines and study booklets keyed to each book of the Bible
- Translated editions of the programme produced for broadcast in many languages worldwide
- Podcast and streaming feeds carrying the daily episode and the on-demand back catalogue

Want a Transcript of a Sermon from This Archive?
The archive is audio with printed notes rather than full transcripts, so if you want McGee's exact wording on a specific verse you will usually need to transcribe the episode. The published notes are outlines of the teaching, not a word-for-word record.
Our free transcription tool turns an episode you have rights to use into searchable, time-stamped text in minutes, which is what makes a five-year audio commentary usable as a reference. Keep transcripts of copyrighted broadcasts for personal study.
The Lutheran Hour archive is worth reading alongside this one for a second example of a radio ministry that outlived its original voice.
Transcribe sermon audio freeHow Thru the Bible's Approach Can Inspire Your Church's Archive
Almost every archive is open-ended. This one was designed to be finished, and that changed what it could do.
1.A finished archive can run forever
Because the cycle was complete and recorded, the programme needed no new production to keep airing. Completeness, not volume, is what let the ministry outlive its teacher by decades.
2.Cover the whole book, not the popular parts
Sequential coverage means someone searching an obscure passage finds something. Topical archives are dense in a few places and empty everywhere else.
3.Publish notes alongside the audio
McGee's printed outlines are why the audio is navigable. Even a one-page outline per sermon makes an audio archive dramatically more usable than no text at all.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Thru the Bible free?
Yes. The daily broadcast is free to hear, and the archive on ttb.org is free to stream and download. The ministry has long made its study notes available at little or no cost and funds itself through donations. The recordings remain under its copyright.
How long is the Thru the Bible program?
Each episode runs about thirty minutes, and the full journey through all sixty-six books of the Bible takes five years of daily broadcasts. When the cycle finishes it starts again at Genesis, so a listener can join at any point and complete the whole Bible within five years.
Who was J. Vernon McGee?
J. Vernon McGee (1904–1988) was an American pastor and radio Bible teacher, best known for his ministry at the Church of the Open Door in Los Angeles and for creating Thru the Bible. His teaching style was conversational and plainspoken, aimed at ordinary listeners rather than scholars, which is a large part of why the recordings have aged so well.
Is Thru the Bible still broadcast?
Yes. The programme has aired continuously since McGee's death in 1988, using the recordings he made during his lifetime, and the ministry has produced translated editions for broadcast in a large number of languages worldwide. Station listings are on ttb.org.
Can I start Thru the Bible in the middle of the cycle?
Yes, and most listeners do. The archive on ttb.org is browsable by book of the Bible, so you can either follow the live daily cycle from wherever it currently sits or jump directly to the book you want to study.
Are Thru the Bible transcripts available?
The ministry publishes notes and outlines keyed to each book rather than full word-for-word transcripts. For exact wording on a particular verse, transcribing the episode you have legitimate access to is the practical route for personal study.
Your church is building an archive too
Every Sunday recording is a future archive entry. Transcribe it in about five minutes, publish it as searchable text, and your congregation's preaching starts compounding the way these collections did.
