The Village Church Sermon Archive: Complete Guide

The Village Church archive is one of the more approachable entries in the modern Reformed preaching world: two decades of expository series from a church in the Dallas suburbs, published free, in a voice that is deliberately conversational rather than lecture-like. This guide covers what the archive holds, where to find it, and how it relates to the neighbouring collections from Desiring God and Ligonier that share much of its theology.

What Is the Village Church Sermon Archive?

Matt Chandler became lead pastor of the congregation now known as The Village Church, in Flower Mound in the Dallas and Fort Worth area, in 2002, when it was a small and declining church. It grew substantially over the following two decades, operating for a period as a multi-campus church before moving those campuses toward becoming autonomous congregations. Chandler was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2009 and continued in ministry after treatment; the sermons from that period are among the most searched in the archive.

Theologically the preaching sits in the same Reformed evangelical stream as John Piper's, and our Desiring God archive page covers the largest collection in that stream. Chandler has also been closely associated with Acts 29, the church-planting network, in which he held a leading role; his involvement has changed over time, and in 2022 he stepped back from the pulpit for a period following a matter of conduct in online correspondence before returning. Consult the church's own statements for the accurate record on that, rather than secondhand summaries.

What's Inside the Archive

The archive is organised around expository series working through books of the Bible, with topical series and conference messages alongside. Video is the primary format, with audio and podcast versions of most messages.

  • Two decades of weekly sermons from The Village Church, filed by series and by scripture
  • Long expository runs through individual books of the Bible, which form the bulk of the collection
  • Topical series and conference messages delivered outside the home pulpit
  • Podcast feeds carrying audio versions of the sermons
  • Study and small-group resources produced alongside some series

How to Access the Village Church Archive

The archive is free to stream. It is primarily video and audio; check the church's site for which series carry written notes or discussion guides.

thevillagechurch.net

The Village Church video channels

Full messages and services published as video, which is where most on-demand viewing happens.

Sermon podcast

Want a Transcript of a Sermon from This Archive?

This is a video and audio archive without a complete transcript library, which makes close study of a long expository series harder than it needs to be. Check the church's site for notes on a specific series before assuming text exists.

Our free transcription tool turns a message you have rights to use into searchable, time-stamped text in minutes, which is what lets you search a twenty-part run through a book rather than replaying it. Keep transcripts of copyrighted preaching for personal study.

For comparison within the same theological stream, the Desiring God archive publishes full manuscripts and the John Piper famous sermons profile covers that ministry's best-known messages.

How the Village Church's approach can inspire your church's archive

This is a mid-sized church archive rather than a broadcast empire, which makes its choices more directly copyable than most on this site.

1.File by book of the Bible from the start

Expository series only become a reference work if the passage is in the metadata. Retrofitting scripture tags onto twenty years of files is a project; adding them each week is a minute.

2.Publish the series page, not just the sermons

A page describing a whole series gives visitors an entry point and gives search engines something to rank that a single audio file cannot provide.

3.Keep the record straight during hard seasons

Congregations and searchers both go looking for what a church actually said during a difficult period. Leaving the primary statements online and findable is better for everyone than letting secondhand versions become the only account.

Frequently asked questions

Are Village Church sermons free?

Yes. The sermon archive is free to stream on thevillagechurch.net, on the church's video channels and through its podcast feed. Some study and group resources are sold. The messages remain under the church's copyright.

Is Matt Chandler still preaching?

He has continued in ministry at The Village Church, including after his 2009 brain tumour diagnosis and treatment and after a period away from the pulpit in 2022. Because that situation has developed over time, the church's own site and statements are the reliable source for his current role.

What is the Acts 29 network?

Acts 29 is an international church-planting network in the Reformed evangelical tradition, which assesses, funds and supports planters and their churches. Matt Chandler held a leading role in it for a number of years; leadership of the network has changed since, so check Acts 29's own site for its current structure.

Where is The Village Church?

In Flower Mound, Texas, in the Dallas and Fort Worth area. The church operated multiple campuses for a period and later moved them toward becoming autonomous congregations, so the current campus arrangement is best confirmed on the church's site.

Are Village Church sermon transcripts available?

There is no complete free transcript library. The archive is published as video and audio, with written notes accompanying some series. For exact wording, transcribing a message you legitimately have access to is the practical route for personal study.

How does this archive compare with Desiring God's?

They sit in the same theological stream but publish very differently. Desiring God pairs nearly every sermon with a full written manuscript; The Village Church publishes video and audio with limited text. The practical result is that Piper is much easier to quote accurately, which is a publishing decision rather than a preaching one.

Your church is building an archive too

Every Sunday recording is a future archive entry. Transcribe it in about five minutes, publish it as searchable text, and your congregation's preaching starts compounding the way these collections did.
