The Saddleback Church Sermon Archive: Complete Guide

Saddleback's sermon archive comes with something most do not: an explanation. Rick Warren founded the church in Lake Forest, California in 1980 and spent much of the following four decades training other pastors in his method, which means the archive is accompanied by an enormous body of material about how the messages were constructed. This guide covers what the Saddleback archive holds, where to find it free, and how the teaching relates to the books that made it famous.

What Is the Saddleback Church Sermon Archive?

Rick Warren started Saddleback Church in Orange County, California in 1980 with a handful of people, and it grew into one of the largest congregations in the United States, with a main campus in Lake Forest and additional locations. His preaching is topical and application-driven, built around named series and outlines that congregants fill in during the message, a practice that incidentally produced a written record of nearly every talk.

Two books turned the method into a movement: The Purpose Driven Church in 1995, aimed at pastors, and The Purpose Driven Life in 2002, aimed at everyone, which became one of the best-selling nonfiction books of its era. Warren handed the senior pastor role to Andy Wood in 2022 and has continued teaching through Pastor Rick's Daily Hope, the broadcast and devotional ministry. Saddleback's decision to ordain women led to it being removed from fellowship with the Southern Baptist Convention in 2023.

What's Inside the Archive

The archive is organised by series, and most series come with printed message outlines, which makes it one of the more text-supported large church collections even though the sermons themselves are published as audio and video.

  • Four decades of weekend messages from Saddleback Church, filed by named series
  • The Purpose Driven series and the campaigns built around it, including the small-group material
  • Pastor Rick's Daily Hope radio broadcast and daily devotional, the edited version of the teaching
  • Fill-in message outlines and study notes published alongside many messages
  • Training material for pastors on sermon preparation and church health, developed from the same body of work

Want a Transcript of a Sermon from This Archive?

Saddleback's fill-in outlines give you the skeleton of a message but not the wording, and the archive itself is audio and video. If you want to study how a point was actually made, rather than what it was called, you need text.

Our free transcription tool turns a recording you have rights to use into searchable, time-stamped text in minutes. Pair the transcript with the published outline and you can see exactly how the structure was filled. Keep transcripts of copyrighted preaching for personal study.

For a shorter route, our Rick Warren sermon notes page condenses the outline method he teaches.

How Saddleback Church's Approach Can Inspire Your Church's Archive

Warren has spent his career telling pastors how to do this, so the lessons here are unusually explicit.

1.Publish the outline with the message

Saddleback's fill-in notes mean every message ships with a structured text artefact. Even a bullet outline makes a sermon findable, skimmable and reusable in a way that raw audio never is.

2.Build campaigns, not just series

Warren tied preaching series to small-group curricula and church-wide campaigns. The archive entry then has a purpose beyond replay, and the material keeps working long after the Sunday.

3.Teach your method out loud

Documenting how you prepare makes your archive legible to other people. It is also the cheapest way to make sure the method survives you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Rick Warren still preaching?

He stepped down as senior pastor of Saddleback Church in 2022, handing the role to Andy Wood, and has continued teaching through Pastor Rick's Daily Hope, his broadcast and devotional ministry, alongside his work training pastors. He is no longer the regular weekend preacher at Saddleback.

What is Purpose Driven Life?

The Purpose Driven Life is Warren's 2002 book, structured as a forty-day reading plan around the question of what a person exists for. It became one of the best-selling nonfiction books of its era and grew out of the same body of teaching found in the Saddleback archive. The earlier companion volume, The Purpose Driven Church (1995), addressed the same ideas to pastors.

Are Saddleback sermons free?

Yes. Weekend messages are free to watch and stream on saddleback.com and the church's video channels, and Pastor Rick's Daily Hope is free to hear. Some study guides and pastor-training resources are sold. The messages remain under the church's copyright.

Who pastors Saddleback now?

Andy Wood became lead pastor in 2022 when Rick Warren stepped down. Warren remains associated with the church as founding pastor and continues his own teaching ministry separately.

Why was Saddleback removed from the Southern Baptist Convention?

Saddleback was removed from fellowship with the Southern Baptist Convention in 2023 following its ordination of women as pastors, which the SBC held to be inconsistent with its statement of faith. The church has continued to operate independently of the convention since.

Are Saddleback sermon transcripts available?

The church publishes fill-in message outlines and study notes for many messages, which is more written support than most large churches provide, but these are outlines rather than full transcripts. For word-level accuracy, transcribe a recording you legitimately have access to.
