What is an M4A file?

M4A is the file extension Apple uses for audio stored in an MPEG-4 container — essentially MP4 minus the video track. The audio inside is almost always AAC (Advanced Audio Coding), a more efficient successor to MP3 at the same bitrate. iPhone Voice Memos, QuickTime, GarageBand, Logic Pro, iTunes purchases, and many Zoom recordings all save as M4A natively.

For sermon transcription, M4A is one of the most common formats we see — pastors record on their phone, then need a transcript. Our pipeline reads AAC inside M4A directly without conversion, so there's no quality loss and no extra wait time. A 45-minute iPhone recording transcribes in about 5 minutes flat.

Step-by-step: iPhone Voice Memo to text

  1. 1

Open the Voice Memo on your iPhone

Open the Voice Memos app, tap the memo you want to transcribe. If it's longer than needed, trim out the silent intro/outro: tap the three-dot menu → Edit Recording → tap the trim icon → drag the yellow handles → Done → Save.

  2. 2

    Export the .m4a file

Tap the Share icon (the square with the up-arrow). Choose Save to Files (saves to iCloud Drive or On My iPhone) or AirDrop to a nearby Mac. The exported file is named with the memo title and ends in .m4a.

  3. 3

Get the file onto a computer (optional but easier)

Uploading from iPhone Safari works but is slow on cellular. If you have a Mac, AirDrop the .m4a — it appears in Downloads in 5 seconds. On Windows, AirDrop to iCloud Drive then download from iCloud.com.

  4. 4

Open /transcribe and drag the .m4a in

Drop straight into the upload zone. The free tier accepts up to 25MB — most iPhone memos under 30 minutes fit. For longer recordings, switch to Compressed quality in iPhone Settings → Voice Memos (drops file size 4–5x).

  5. 5

    Pick Standard or Premium tier

Standard ($0.006/min) for a single voice memo. Premium ($0.02/min) if you're transcribing a multi-speaker interview or panel discussion and want speaker labels.

  6. 6

Wait ~5 minutes, download .txt or .srt

Same outputs as every other format: .txt for blog posts, .srt for video captions, .vtt for web players, .docx with formatted timestamps every 30 seconds.

M4A-specific tips

  • Recording a sermon with your iPhone? Position the phone within 3 feet of the speaker with the bottom (where the mic is) pointed toward them. Lapel mic adapters like the Saramonic SmartMic+ ($25) plugged into Lightning/USB-C cut room reverb dramatically.
  • Voice Memo bigger than 25MB? Either trim silence (Edit Recording in the app) or switch iPhone's recording quality to Compressed in Settings → Voice Memos. Compressed drops file size 4–5x with no transcription accuracy loss.
  • Want to upload directly from iPhone Safari? It works but uploads slow on cellular. Switch to Wi-Fi or, faster, AirDrop the .m4a to a Mac first and upload from there.
  • iTunes Music purchase (.m4a, .m4p) won't upload? Those are DRM-protected (Protected AAC). Re-record via screen capture, or strip DRM with the Apple Music desktop app (File → Convert → Create AAC version, then export the new file).
  • Want to back up the original? Keep the original M4A in iCloud Drive or Google Drive. Upload a duplicate for transcription — you preserve the master while having a searchable transcript.

M4A transcription FAQ

Can I upload an iPhone Voice Memo directly?+

Yes. iPhone Voice Memos save as .m4a (AAC inside an MP4 container) by default. Open the memo in the Voice Memos app, tap Share, choose Save to Files (or AirDrop to a Mac), then drag that .m4a straight into our upload zone. No conversion needed.

What is the maximum M4A file size on the free tier?+

25MB on the free tier. A typical 1-hour iPhone Voice Memo at standard quality is 30–50MB. Either trim out silence at the start/end in the Voice Memos app (Edit Recording → Trim), or switch the recording quality to Compressed in Settings → Voice Memos (drops file size 4–5x).

Does it work on M4A from Mac QuickTime?+

Yes. QuickTime, GarageBand, and Logic Pro all export to .m4a (AAC). Same workflow as Voice Memos — drag the file in and it transcribes. Even M4A files from older Zoom recorders work natively.

How accurate is M4A transcription?+

99.0–99.5% on a clear iPhone recording held close to the speaker. The biggest accuracy killer is distance: a phone laying flat on a pew 10 feet from the pulpit picks up too much room reverb. Hold the phone within 3 feet, or better, clip a $20 Saramonic lav mic to the speaker.

Can I share directly from the iPhone Voice Memos app?+

Yes — open the memo, tap Share, choose your browser, then paste-upload into our /transcribe page. Or use Safari on iOS — drag-drop works on iPad with Files. Simplest is AirDrop to a Mac, then upload via desktop browser.

What about M4A from older Android devices or Zoom?+

Older Android phones save voice memos as AMR or 3GPP, not M4A. If your file is .amr, convert it to .m4a or .mp3 first with a free online converter or VLC. Zoom recordings save as .m4a natively and upload directly.
