Prayer points from Sunday’s sermon, for the week

The prayer meeting on Wednesday and the sermon on Sunday rarely meet. The prayer list is the same list as last month, and the sermon is already fading.

A set of prayer points shaped by what was preached, so the midweek meeting prays the sermon and the week has one thread.

What it wrote for a real sermon

Below is what the Prayer Points produced for a public-domain Spurgeon sermon, unedited. Yours is written from your transcript the same way.

What the Prayer Points wrote for Spurgeon's ‘Hope in Hopeless Cases’ (1868), unedited

Praise

  • For Jesus Christ, whose mercy reaches the extremes of human condition and whose power brings freedom to those bound by Satan.
  • For the living, authoritative Saviour who is able to heal desperate cases and achieve what human help cannot.

Confession

  • That we have limited the Holy One of Israel by giving up difficult cases instead of constantly bringing them to Jesus.
  • That we have trusted in human strength and ordinary means rather than seeking greater spiritual vigour through prayer and fasting.
  • That we have doubted Christ’s willingness and power to save, dishonouring him and injuring those who need his help.

Asking

  • That the Holy Spirit would find far-off wanderers and liberate those bound with fetters of iron, so they may become the Lord’s freed ones.
  • That Jesus would bring peace to broken and desponding souls, replacing mourning with the oil of joy and the spirit of heaviness with the garment of praise.
  • That the Lord would make the deaf to hear his sweet encouragements in the dungeons of despair and give utterance to those whose prayers are confused and untranslatable.
  • That parents, relatives, ministers, and Christian friends would faithfully bring distressed loved ones to Jesus without hesitation or doubt.
  • That the Lord would speak with authority to every foul spirit, command it to come out, and ensure that those whom he heals do not return to bondage.
  • That those who believe they have gone too far from Christ would trust that their extremities are only extremities to them and not to him.

Commitment

  • That we would pray more and practise self-denial so that, by God’s Spirit working in us, we may be strengthened to face the most distressing cases.
  • That we would continue bringing every difficulty in our own souls and in the souls of others to the living and interceding Jesus.
  • That we would pity and pray for those passing through spiritual darkness rather than thank God that we know nothing about such struggles.
