The big idea
Dead people do not improve — the passage turns on two words in verse 4.
Context you need before you preach it
Paul's diagnosis in verses 1–3 is not that people are unwell but that they are dead. That matters, because dead is a category that rules out self-help entirely.
Verses 1–3 are one long sentence with no main verb resolution until verse 4. The grammar itself makes you wait for "But God", which is the most important hinge in the letter.
The outline
Dead, walking, by nature children of wrath
vv. 1–3Three influences — the world, the ruler of the power of the air, the flesh. Note "we all once lived" — Paul includes himself.
But God, being rich in mercy
vv. 4–5The hinge. Two words that change the direction of the entire paragraph. Slow down here.
Raised up and seated with him
vv. 6–7Past tense. Already seated. The purpose given is that God might show the riches of his grace in the ages to come.
By grace, through faith, for works
vv. 8–10Verse 10 must not be cut. Not saved by works — created for them. Works are the destination, never the road.
Application
- If the diagnosis is death, every self-improvement strategy is category error. Preach the diagnosis before the cure.
- "But God" is the shape of every Christian testimony. Ask people to locate theirs.
- Verses 8–9 and verse 10 belong together; separating them produces either legalism or passivity.
Where preachers go wrong on this text
- Softening verses 1–3. The grace in verse 4 is only as large as the death in verse 1.
- Stopping at verse 9, which is where the misuse of this passage always happens.
- Preaching it as purely individual when Ephesians 2 goes straight on to the joining of Jew and gentile.
Other ways to structure it
The outline above is one defensible reading, not the only one. If it does not fit the congregation in front of you, these are legitimate alternatives:
- Preach "But God" as the whole sermon, tracing the phrase through scripture.
- Preach verses 1–10 with 11–22 to keep the corporate dimension.
- Preach verse 10 alone as a sermon on vocation and good works.
