Walking in the Light
The big idea
Walking in the light is not sinlessness — it is the end of pretending, which is why it produces both fellowship and cleansing.
Context you need before you preach it
John is writing against a group claiming spiritual superiority and, apparently, sinlessness. The three "if we say" statements in this passage are quotations of their claims being refuted.
The light image is about exposure rather than achievement. Walking in the light means being where things are visible, not being clean enough to be there.
The outline
God is light, and in him is no darkness at all
v. 5The premise. Everything else follows from the character of God rather than from a rule.
If we say we have fellowship and walk in darkness, we lie
vv. 6–7Note what walking in the light produces — fellowship with one another, and cleansing. Both are relational.
If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves
v. 8Self-deception first. The one being fooled is the speaker.
If we confess, he is faithful and righteous to forgive
vv. 9–10Faithful and righteous — not merely merciful. Forgiveness here is God being consistent with himself.
Application
- Walking in the light means being known rather than being clean. Most people have that backwards.
- Confession is agreeing with what is already visible in the light, not informing God.
- Forgiveness rests on God's faithfulness and justice, which is a firmer ground than his leniency.
Where preachers go wrong on this text
- Preaching light as sinlessness, which makes verse 7 contradict verse 8 in the same paragraph.
- Turning confession into a technique for managing guilt.
- Missing the polemical setting — John is answering specific claims.
Other ways to structure it
The outline above is one defensible reading, not the only one. If it does not fit the congregation in front of you, these are legitimate alternatives:
- Preach the three "if we say" claims as three points.
- Preach verse 7 on the link between honesty and community.
- Preach verse 9 alone as a sermon on confession.
