Robert Charles Sproul

Founder of Ligonier Ministries, teacher on Renewing Your Mind, and the theologian who brought classical Reformed doctrine to a mass evangelical audience.

Biography

R.C. Sproul founded the Ligonier Valley Study Center in Pennsylvania in 1971 as a place where ordinary Christians could be taught theology seriously, and that instinct defined the rest of his life: he was a trained academic who chose the lay audience. Renewing Your Mind carried his teaching daily on radio for decades. The Holiness of God, developed from his lectures on Isaiah 6, is the work most people encounter first, and it is characteristic — a single doctrine pursued until it becomes overwhelming rather than abstract. Sproul was a central figure in drafting the Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy, later founded Saint Andrew's Chapel in Sanford, Florida, and served as its preaching pastor, and helped establish Reformation Bible College. He was a persistent critic of Evangelicals and Catholics Together and argued throughout his career that justification by faith alone could not be treated as a secondary matter.

Legacy

More than any other single teacher, Sproul is responsible for the resurgence of Reformed theology among American evangelicals in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Ligonier continues to distribute his teaching, and his lectures remain a standard entry point into systematic theology for non-specialists.
