Biography

Mark Driscoll founded Mars Hill Church in Seattle in 1996 and led it until his resignation in 2014, during which time it grew into a multi-campus church and one of the most visible congregations in American evangelicalism. He was also a co-founder of the Acts 29 church-planting network and a prominent voice in the movement often labelled the 'young, restless, and Reformed'. His tenure at Mars Hill ended amid sustained controversy over his leadership conduct; a church investigation found him guilty of patterns of persistent sinful behaviour, he resigned, and Mars Hill dissolved into independent congregations the following year. Acts 29 had removed him from membership shortly before. In 2016 he and his family planted Trinity Church in Scottsdale, Arizona, where he continues to preach, and he publishes his teaching through RealFaith. Driscoll's preaching is characteristically long-form and book-by-book, working through entire biblical books over extended series, with heavy emphasis on practical application to marriage, family, work, and masculinity.

Legacy

Driscoll's influence on a generation of church planters — through Mars Hill's model and the Acts 29 network — was substantial, and the collapse of Mars Hill became one of the most examined cautionary cases in recent evangelical history, prompting widespread reassessment of celebrity pastor culture, church governance, and accountability structures. Both parts of that record are relevant to anyone studying his ministry.
