Biography
Joyce Meyer began teaching a weekly Bible study in St. Louis in the 1970s and later served as associate pastor at Life Christian Center before founding what is now Joyce Meyer Ministries. Her teaching is practical rather than expository — she works from Scripture toward daily conduct, emotional health, forgiveness, and the interior life, and she speaks openly about the childhood sexual abuse she survived, which is central to why her audience trusts her. That candor built an unusually loyal following among women in particular, at a time when few women held a teaching platform of that size in American evangelicalism. Her ministry has also drawn scrutiny: a United States Senate inquiry beginning in 2007 examined the finances of several large media ministries including hers, and Joyce Meyer Ministries cooperated with the review, subsequently joining the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability and making governance changes. Theologically she is associated with the Word of Faith stream, and critics have challenged her teaching on prosperity, confession, and the nature of the atonement.
Legacy
Meyer opened a path for women as broadcast Bible teachers in a segment of American Christianity that had largely reserved that role for men, and her books on emotional and mental life — Battlefield of the Mind above all — remain in print decades after publication.
