Biography
Joel Osteen spent seventeen years producing his father John Osteen's television broadcast at Lakewood Church before preaching his first sermon in 1999, weeks before his father's death. He had no seminary training and had actively avoided the pulpit; he took the church anyway and grew it from roughly six thousand weekly attenders into the largest congregation in the United States, relocating in 2005 into the former Compaq Center, the arena once home to the Houston Rockets. His messages are short, warm, structurally simple, and built around encouragement, favor, and the conviction that God intends good for ordinary people. That emphasis is also the center of the criticism he draws: theologians across traditions have argued that his preaching is thin on sin, repentance, judgment, and the cross, and that it shades into the prosperity gospel. Osteen has generally declined to engage those critiques in doctrinal terms, describing his calling as encouragement rather than instruction. Whatever one concludes about the theology, the reach is not in dispute — his broadcast reaches millions weekly across more than a hundred countries, and Your Best Life Now has sold in the tens of millions.
Legacy
Osteen is the defining figure of accessible, optimistic American megachurch broadcasting, and the clearest case study in the debate over what preaching is for. Pastors study him from both directions: some for his unusual gift at holding a mass audience, others as the example they are deliberately preaching against.
